Can I save money by buying a new pc without a hard drive?

Can I save money by buying a new pc without a hard drive, tv tuner, or dvd drive? I currently have a 160 GB hard drive with Windows Media Center installed, could I take those components out and put them in my new Core 2 Duo pc (my old one is a socket 939 AMD 64). Will this work, has anyone done it? Not having to install everything again would be great.
Good answers people, how easy is it to transfer your details to another computer by another method?
